Studio 41 PREFEB http://thestudio41.wordpress.com

prefab is an exhibition of works exploring the impermanance of a previous era. Lesley McDermott, Angie Mclaren, Carolyn Mason and Linda McLaughlin use materials to challenge and provoke personal responses on issues from women’s role in society and our childhood, to the influence of our environment and experiences on what we become. Works presented include prints drawn from feminist text alluding to shifts in current attitudes to equality, handmade paper hangings that trap personal items, and a christening dress stitched meticulously from condoms.

My first experience of papermaking was in 1997 . I loved the potentional from the start and knew it was a medium i wanted to explore further. I continue to experiment and develop new works by crossing over traditional and experimental papermaking, sculpture and textiles. .We live in a wasteful society ,paper is taken for granted. Tossed aside and disregarded When no longer needed . most of my raw materials come from such pulped paper combined with plant fibres and found objects these already have history and hold hidden memories and information from the past .

paper piece contains personal letters and hand written quotes from the nine women

First Thought

we all make judgments without really knowing the truth. imagine back to when you woke up this morning
what did you think about ?
were you happy to get up and start your day?
i invited 9 women to anonymously reveal their private thoughts upon awakening...
each piece was recorded alone in their bedroom ,just as they were on that day.
their voices ,as well as their handwritten quotes and images taken by each of the women as their eyes scan their bedroom on wakening, invites the viewer to gaze into each one of their very individual lives
on hearing and seeing their personal belongings ,you may ask yourself ...what's she all about ?
what type of life does she lead ?
do these thoughts define who these women are ?
does it have an impact on their day as a whole ?
or is it simply just that ,a first thought ?
they all have their own stories that run deeper than their first thought
i,m only scratching the surface...
